Universal Music Group And TikTok Strike A Deal To Restore Their Artists’ Music To The App

Universal Music Group and TikTok have achieved a resolution that would allow UMG’s music to be back on the app after months of standoff. According to information released on May 2, 2024, TikTok will give UMG artists and composers greater compensation, give them access to more marketing resources, and address the rising usage of artificial intelligence.

As readers may remember, UMG had previously removed its catalog from TikTok due to disagreements with inadequate royalties paid to artists, the unregulated use of artificial intelligence, and safety concerns pertaining to bullying and mental health. TikTok responded to UMG’s charges by saying the record label was prioritizing its own interests over those of the musicians it signed.

Additionally, the social networking site reaffirmed that it would not be coerced into paying more than it was prepared to. Artists represented by UMG subsidiaries will be relieved that TikTok and UMG have reached an agreement, allowing them to once again take advantage of TikTok’s substantial promotional advantages.

Fans will also be happy to hear that they can now connect with their favorite UMG musicians. However, while UMG and TikTok have worked things out, the government of China has ordered the Chinese company to sell off its US division or face penalties. The same cannot be said for TikTok and the US.
