Universal Music Group Dishes Out Fresh Threat To Remove Its Catalogue From TikTok

The deal between Universal Music Group and TikTok is about to expire in a day because the two parties couldn’t agree on matters like artist compensation and artificial intelligence.

As a result, some of the most well-known songs in the world, like those by Taylor Swift, Harry Styles, and the recently viral hit Murder on the Dancefloor, will no longer be available on TikTok.

The largest music company in the world, UMG, accused TikTok of trying to “bully” and “intimidate” them into “accepting a deal worth less than the previous deal, far less than fair market value and not reflective of their exponential growth” in a scathing open letter titled “Why we must call Time Out on TikTok” that was published on Tuesday.

TikTok is a social networking app that lets users create short movies, most of which have licensed music and sound effects. It is owned by the Chinese business ByteDance.

It is impossible to overestimate UMG’s influence on contemporary music—the label owns the rights to a dizzying array of artists, including Adele, U2, Coldplay, Post Malone, Kendrick Lamar, SZA, Ariana Grande, Drake, Sting, Elton John, Bob Dylan, and more.

It is the only record company to have four times in history held nine of the top ten albums on the Billboard 200 music chart simultaneously. After the deal ends on Wednesday, all of UMG’s music will be deleted from TikTok if an agreement cannot be reached.
