Usher And Babyface To Receive Special Recognition From The Apollo

The Apollo has revealed the recipients of this year’s Spring Benefit, which takes place on Tuesday, June 11th and is the historic theater’s biggest annual fundraising event.

One of the most renowned creative forces in music history, Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds, will be honored with the first-ever Legacy Award at the Spring Benefit and enshrined into The Apollo’s illustrious Walk of Fame the day before, on Monday, June 10. Usher, an eight-time Grammy Award winner and multi-platinum worldwide superstar, will receive the Icon Award during the joyous benefit event.

Hip-hop icon Big Daddy Kane will make a surprise appearance at the event, which is celebrating the nonprofit organization’s 90 years as a haven for artists and a supporter of black culture. Grammy and Emmy Award winner Adam Blackstone will serve as music director. It was also revealed by the Theater that Babyface will be inducted into its Walk of Fame on Monday, June 10th at 11:30 a.m., the day prior to May Benefit.

Along with the legendary performers who have graced the Apollo stage over the past nine decades—including Aretha Franklin, Quincy Jones, Richard Pryor, Patti Labelle, Smokey Robinson, Jackie “Moms” Mabley, Gladys Knight, Lionel Richie, Ella Fitzgerald, Temptations, and most recently, Mary J. Blige—Babyface joins a distinguished group whose influence has shaped culture for generations.
