Yemi Alade Stirs Up Controversy With Comments On Nigerian Musicians Changing Genres

Nigerian singer Yemi Alade’s recent remarks about the changing story of genre shifts among Afrobeats musicians have sparked a flurry of responses online.

On Wednesday, May 1, the singer posted her thoughts on the current industry changes via her X handle. The post addressed the trend of Nigerian singers openly announcing their transition from Afrobeats to other genres, particularly Afrofusion. Alade said in her statement that she thought there was nothing intrinsically wrong with musicians announcing a genre shift.

She did, however, stress the significance of the pronouncements made in this regard, stating that the way artists communicate these changes is crucial. Many have read Alade’s remark as a subtle jab at fellow Nigerian musicians Burna Boy and Wizkid, who both recently announced that they would no longer be performing under the Afrobeats genre.

The award-winning musician discussed musicians who, in her opinion, downplay the importance of Afrobeats in their musical careers, calling such behavior “hypocritical.” Alade called for artists to peacefully notify any changes to their work by sharing an excerpt of her widely shared tweet with their followers.

The message encouraged artists to be open and honest about the genres they enjoy working in. The conversation prompted by Alade’s remarks demonstrates the continuous debate about genre categorization and artistic identity that exists within the Nigerian music business.
