Before enrolling in the youth academy of Le Havre in 2011, Benjamin Mendy started his youth career with neighbourhood clubs in the Paris area. He made his professional debut for the team in 2012 and quickly became one of Ligue 2’s top left-backs. Mendy joined French Ligue 1 team Marseille in 2013. In the following four seasons, he appeared in over 100 games after making his club debut in August of that year. Mendy earned a reputation at Marseille for being a strong defender who could also move forward and help the attack.

Monaco, a Ligue 1 rival of Olympique de Marseille, confirmed on June 22, 2016, that they had signed Mendy to a five-year deal. On July 27, Mendy made his club debut during the first leg of the third-round Champions League matchup against the Turkish team Fenerbahçe. Mendy played a significant role in Monaco winning the Ligue 1 title in 2016–17. Under manager Leonardo Jardim, Mendy made 24 league starts for Les Monégasques. During the season, Monaco led the league with 107 goals, and Mendy and fellow full-back Djibril Sidibé were praised for their attacking play.

Along with five teammates, Mendy was named to the 2017 UNFP Team of the Year on May 16. The following day, against Saint-Étienne on the penultimate day of the season, Monaco won Ligue 1—their first title in 17 seasons—in what would be Mendy’s final match for the team.

Mendy joined Manchester City, an English Premier League team, in July 2017. He made his club debut in September 2017 and quickly established himself as a key squad member. He played a significant role in the squad that captured the Premier League title in the 2017–2018 campaign. Injury setbacks limited his time with the team, and he played in just 15 league games in the 2018–19 campaign. Mendy was called to the French national team in 2016 due to his impressive performances at Manchester City. He joined Les Bleus for the first time in March 2017 and has since become a regular player. Mendy is renowned for his gregarious demeanour and adoration of social media off the field. He has a sizable Instagram following and is well-known for his amusing and entertaining posts. Overall, Benjamin Mendy is a left-back who has made a name for himself as one of the best in the English league. His talent and adaptability were not in doubt. He was an important member of the French and Manchester City soccer teams, and he had a promising soccer career ahead of him -until tragedy struck and he was wrongly accused.

On August 26, 2021, the Cheshire Constabulary arrested Mendy and accused him of four counts of rape and one count of sexual assault. Three female complainants older than 16 accused him of committing crimes between October 2020 and August 2021, the basis for the initial charges.

His prior bail conditions prohibiting him from hosting house parties were broken, so his bail application was rejected. He is under suspension from Manchester City pending the conclusion of his trial. Mendy appeared in court on September 10 and was given a custody order. On November 16, 2021, Mendy was charged with two additional rape-related counts. Another accuser accused him of rape on another count in December. He was granted bail because Mendy resided at his home address in Prestbury Cheshire, did not communicate with the complainants, and turned in his passport on January 7, 2022.

He appeared in court on February 2 to answer a new attempted rape charge brought by a sixth complainant. About six complainants, Mendy entered a not-guilty plea on May 22 to seven counts of rape, one of attempted rape, and one of sexual assault. A fresh complainant claims that on June 1, Mendy was accused of committing a second rape. On August 10, 2022, the Chester Crown Court trial was underway. Eight counts of rape, one count of attempted rape, and one count of sexual assault were brought against Mendy. To all charges, he entered a not-guilty plea.

On September 13, 2022, Mendy was declared not guilty of one count of rape against a woman who was 19 years old. Judge Stephen Everett instructed the jury to return a not guilty verdict after the prosecution decided not to pursue a guilty verdict on the single count. This followed the release of a video showing the complainant engaging in consensual sexual activity with Louis Saha Matturie, one of Mendy’s co-accused. On January 13, 2023, a jury also found Mendy not guilty of the other six counts of rape and one count of sexual assault.

Following the conclusion of his trial and acquittal, which spanned over three years, other football players, including Jack Grealish, Paul Pogba, Vinicius Junior, Rio Ferdinand, and Memphis Depay, posted messages in support of Mendy. Depay expressed concern over the lack of substantial support provided to Mendy during the legal process by FIFA, his club, the French national team, and the Premier League. He also asked that Mendy be assisted to return to his feet and the false accusers be punished. He sought law protection for athletes from events like this.
