Ella Marija Lani Yelich-O’Connor, best known as Lorde, is a New Zealand singer and songwriter. Lorde’s stage name takes inspiration from aristocracy. She is also known for her unconventional musical styles and introspective songwriting. In her early teens, she began performing at local venues.

Lorde is a recipient of two Grammy Awards, two Brit Awards, and a Golden Globe nomination. She was included in Time’s list of the most influential teenagers in 2013 and 2014. She also appeared in the 2014 edition of Forbes 30 Under 30. Known for writing her own music, she has co-written songs for other artists, including Broods and Bleachers. In June 2017, Lorde was reported to have sold over five million albums worldwide.

In 2009, Lorde signed with Universal Music Group (UMG) and began collaborating with producer Joel Little in 2011. They successfully put together an extended play (EP) titled The Love Club, which was self-released in 2012 for free download on SoundCloud. It was later  commercially released by UMG in 2013. The EP’s contained the international chart-topping single “Royals,” which helped raise her to prominence.

The same year, Lorde’s debut studio album Pure Heroine was released to critical and commercial success. She curated the soundtrack for the 2014 film The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 the following year. She recorded several tracks for the project, including the single “Yellow Flicker Beat.”

Lorde received critical acclaim for her second studio album Melodrama (2017). The album debuted atop the US Billboard 200 and was nominated for Album of the Year at the Grammys. Her third studio album, Solar Power, was released in 2021. The album saw her venture into indie folk and psychedelic styles. It reached number one in Australia and New Zealand and charted inside the top 10 in numerous countries. It received mixed to negative reviews from music critics and fans.

According to Elle, in May 2023, Lorde has been dating Justin Warren “for a number of years, and they’re still going strong. The couple were seen in Sydney earlier this month on a rare public outing at restaurant Surry Hills before she performed that night as part of her Solar Power tour.” They are rumoured to be engaged. Warren reportedly works in the music industry as the American promotions director for Universal Music in New Zealand. The New Zealand Herald reports they first met when Lorde was signed to Universal Music in 2009. She was only 13 years old at the time.

Warren told The Herald, “Ella and I have worked together for years, and we’re good friends. Any rumors of us being ‘a pair’ are ridiculous. Ella has a really busy year ahead of her, and we’ll be spending more time together as plans for the next Lorde record unfold.”
