Veteran performer Charles Oputa, often known as Charly Boy, has sparked heated debates on social media by criticizing the Oba of Benin for claiming that God preordained Tinubu’s presidency. The monarch and Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu attended a meeting together over the weekend. The Oba of Benin’s claim that God has approved of Tinubu’s leadership has provoked a contentious online discussion. Charly Boy said that leaders need to be chosen based on merit rather than supernatural intervention and attacked the monarch for bringing religion into politics. While some social media users agree with Charly Boy’s point of view, others think the Oba of Benin has the right to voice his own.
During the visit, the monarch was quoted as having said:
“God has ordained that Tinubu would become President of Nigeria. We are all one. I am for peace and tranquility. We must live together as one. Nigeria is big. We must iron out our differences and learn to live together as one, big family”
CharlyBoy posted a response to the monarch’s remark on his Instagram page,
”See Oba wey no suppose leave him Palace travel come lagos.
