Fireboy DML Discusses Developing Afro-Life To Give Afrobeats More “Soul And Depth”

The Nigerian Afrobeats artist Fireboy DML has gone deeper into defining his sound as he gets ready for the release of his fourth album. Fireboy has seen incredible success and helped spread Nigerian music over the world since making his breakthrough in 2019 with his debut album, “Laughter, Tears, and Goosebumps.”

The award-winning vocalist recently discussed his self-described Afro-Live genre with BET, identifying it as Afrobeats with a hint of soul and depth. Afrobeats music has always been beautiful, but Fireboy claims that it lacks soul and lyricism. His Afro-Life genre introduced soul and lyricism to Nigerian mainstream pop music.

Fireboy’s criticism of Afrobeats’ lack of soul and lyrics is similar to what Burna Boy said in a 2023 interview with Zane Lowe—that most Afrobeats music is meaningless and unimportant..Additionally, it keeps up the trend of Nigerian musicians forging their own genres in an effort to break free from the Afrobeats label.

Fireboy also provided some information during the conversation regarding his upcoming fourth album, which is anticipated to be released later this year. Addressing the upcoming album, he adds, “It is a culmination of what I’ve learned in the past couple of years.” With the project, he plans to be personal and discuss what success means to him.
