Harvey Mason Jr., The Recording Academy CEO, Explains The Criteria For Winning A Grammy Award

The CEO of the Recording Academy has provided insight into the Grammy Award winning process.

Nigerian music lovers were very interested in the 66th Grammy Awards, which took place in Los Angeles on February 5, 2024, and were hoping that someone from Nigeria would win. After the 66th Grammy Awards, disappointments ensued when Burna Boy, Davido, Asake & Olamide, and Ayra Starr failed to win any of their ten nominations combined.

Harvey Mason Jr., President of the Recording Academy Board of Trustees, states that the Academy judges each song on its merit and that the winners are chosen annually by the members of the Academy.

Mason responded to concerns from the media regarding the inner workings of the Academy’s selection process, saying that the organization takes into account simply the caliber of each song that is submitted.

The professionals in the US music industry who make up the Academy’s membership cast their votes to decide the winner of each category. He went on to say that music professionals vote for one another instead of committees, journalists, or labels.

The results of the 66th Grammy Awards are still being discussed, as Nigerian performers were not recognized with any honors. Ayra Starr’s “Rush,” Davido’s “Unavailable,” Asake & Olamide’s “Amapiano,” and Burna Boy’s “City Boy” were defeated by Tyla’s “Water” in the Best African Music Performance category.
