Russell Simmons Faces A Lawsuit For Allegedly Raping A Def Jam Producer In The 1990s

Russell Simmons was sued on Tuesday by a former music video producer who claimed he had sexually assaulted her while she was employed with Def Jam Recordings in the late nineties.

According to the lawsuit, the woman, known as Jane Doe, went to Simmons’ Manhattan flat to obtain his consent for a preliminary edit of a film. She claims that when she was there, he made a “wrestling move,” pinned her to his bed, and then sexually assaulted her.

Several prominent men, including Simmons, were charged with sexual assault in 2017. He was compelled to resign from his positions at Def Jam and his yoga lifestyle brand after several women shared their accusations against him.

The claims of multiple accusers were covered in length in the 2020 documentary “On the Record.” The lawsuit claims that Jane Doe saw a recognizable pattern. She also struggled to control her heightened emotions at work, had panic attacks, and developed an eating disorder.

Over a two-year span, she quit three jobs at production businesses, according to the complaint. She attended a yoga class in March 2023 and unintentionally sat beside Simmons. She questioned whether it was okay to practice next to him after being surprised when he said her name, according to the claim.

The New York City Gender Motivated Violence Act and the Adult Survivors Act of New York were the legal bases for the lawsuit.
