The CBN Highlights The Security Characteristics Of The New Naira Notes

To reconfirm that the redesigned naira notes are safe to use as legal money, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) yesterday emphasized security features. The new naira notes have special security characteristics that set them apart from older notes and render them impervious to forgery, according to a demonstration by the apex bank. For example, on the N1,000 note, there were at least 23 security features, whereas there were 15 on the N500 and ten on the N200. Following concerns that fake copies of the new naira notes were already in circulation just a few days after their formal introduction, the demonstrative naira notes with indicated security measures were released.

A viral video that increased awareness of a fake N1,000 new naira note caused many respondents who spoke with The Nation to express their fear of becoming counterfeit victims. Respondents claimed to have seen an item resembling the N1,000 note allegedly fake in the popular video. However, they added that because the new notes were not yet available, it was difficult for people to recognize them.

The apex bank advises users to look for the following features to identify N1,000 notes: intaglio raised print, portrait watermark, officially variable ink that changes from blue to green with a change in angle of view, kinegram with the image of N1,000 and Coat of Arms, iridescent band, windowed metallic security thread, and see-through printing in register.
