Doyin Okupe Biography
Dr. Doyin Okupe, also known as Adedoyin Ajibike Okupe, was a Nigerian doctor and politician who co-founded Royal Cross Medical Center and served as the National Publicity Secretary of the National Republican Convention. He was born on March 22, 1952. (NRC). He was detained by General Sani Abacha and later barred from running in the United Nigeria Congress Party (UNCP) primaries.
Later, he ran for governor of Ogun State as a candidate for the People’s Democratic Party (PDP). In addition, Okupe served as President Olusegun Obasanjo’s Special Assistant on Media and Publicity and President Goodluck Jonathan’s Senior Special Assistant on Public Affairs.
Political Career
Okupe was a National Party of Nigeria (NPN) House of Representatives candidate in the 1983 Nigerian parliamentary election during the Second Nigerian Republic. Okupe was appointed National Publicity Secretary of the National Republican Convention during the Third Nigerian Republic (NRC). He was one of the NRC delegates who witnessed the collation of the 1993 Nigerian presidential election results at the National Electoral Commission’s headquarters (NEC).
Okupe was named Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to President Olusegun Obasanjo at the start of the Fourth Nigerian Republic. Later, in 2002, he was a significant contender in the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) governorship primaries in Ogun State alongside Gbenga Daniel. Okupe was appointed President Goodluck Jonathan’s Senior Special Assistant on Public Affairs in 2012. Okupe served as a publicist for several PDP presidential candidates in Nigeria, including President Olusegun Obasanjo, President Goodluck Jonathan, Bukola Saraki, and Vice President Atiku Abubakar.
He later rejoined the PDP and became a spokesman for the Presidential Campaign Organization of Atiku Abubakar, the PDP’s presidential candidate in the 2019 Nigerian election. Okupe joined the Labour Party ahead of the 2023 Nigerian general election and served as the party’s running partner and vice presidential candidate until a substantive candidate was chosen.
