Nia Long Biography
Long was born in Brooklyn, New York City, to Talita Long (née Gillman), a teacher and printmaker, and Doughtry Long, a high school English teacher, and poet. Her mother is of Trinidadian ancestry. The actress and comedian known as Sommore, one of the stars of The Queens of Comedy, is her older half-sister. Long’s parents split up when she was two years old. She traveled with her mother when she relocated to Iowa City to pursue her studies in the fine arts.
When Long was seven years old, her mother relocated to South Los Angeles because she wanted to get married there. She decided to remain in Los Angeles even though she and her fiance decided to call off their wedding. Trenton, New Jersey, was the home of Long’s father. So she took a bus from South LA to Paseo Del Rey Elementary School in Playa Del Rey from third to sixth grade.
While in Inglewood, California, she attended St. Mary’s Academy. She took classes in gymnastics, ballet, tap, jazz, guitar, acting, and other disciplines in addition to her academic studies. In 1989, she earned her diploma from Los Angeles’ Westchester High School.

Patrol, a Disney television film starring Sean Astin, Tim Thomerson, and Brian Keith. Her three-year contract role as Kathryn “Kat” Speakes on the serial opera Guiding Light was her first recognized television performance. She played Kat between 1991 to 1994. She portrayed Boyz n the Hood’s character Brandi. Long, who was playing her “first true movie part,” was excited by the movie.
