Pastor William Folorunsho Kumuyi Biography
Pastor William Folorunsho Kumuyi, well known as W.F Kumuyi, is the founder and General Superintendent of the Deeper Life Christian Life Ministry situated at Gbagada, Lagos, Nigeria. Kumuyi is the author of several devotionals and children’s books. He is regarded as one of the oldest founders of a pentecostal church in Nigeria.
Family
Kumuyi was born into a Christian family in Erin-Ijesa, Ogun State, in the western part of Nigeria. Describing his upbringing, Kumuyi said, “We would get up in the morning, read the Bible, sing hymns, and go to church regularly. When I went to secondary school, I lost interest in the church because our principal taught us atheism. But after a while, I thought again and started going to various churches in town. Eventually, in 1963, a group of singers and preachers from a Gospel church got permission to come to the school. I understood the Gospel message and was born again on April 5th, 1964. I read John Wesley, Charles Finney, Spurgeon, and lots of other books. I got involved with the Scripture Union, and I grew.”
Parents
Pastor W.F Kumuyi’s parents were Gabriel Kumuyi Akinfenwa and Comfort Idowu Kumuyi Akinfenwa. His father, Gabriel, was a member of the Anglican church. Pastor Kumuyi was born into an Anglican family and raised Anglican. His father was reportedly a priest at the church.
Children
With his first wife Abiodun, W.F Kumuyi had two children, Jeremiah, and John Kumuyi. Both sons are married. John Kumuyi married Love Odih Kumuyi in 2013 in Jamaica. According to reports, he had a “flamboyant” wedding for which the ministry suspended him. Despite the ministry’s rules, Love wore a touch of makeup and lipstick during the ceremony. The church reportedly has strict laws which outlaw such, including video coverage. The couple was carried in an ash-coloured limousine which made a buzz on social media.
Realizing the embarrassment he caused the church, John Kumuyi apologized profusely during the mid-year celebration program at the Lagos-Ibadan expressway. His letter read, “We unreservedly and wholeheartedly stated that we did not intend and do not intend that our act or omissions in any way undermine the great work that God has done through the Deeper Christian Life Ministry through our father, the General Superintendent.”
“We have now realized the far-reaching effect of our actions and omissions and do plead with the church for forgiveness and also appeal that any action that should be taken be directed at John and Love, as we take this time to prayerfully reflect on our actions,”
“We take full responsibility for what has happened and this action should in no way be blamed on the General Superintendent or the leaders of the church in Nigeria, United States, Jamaica, or United Kingdom and beyond.”
The letter was read several times at the 50,000-capacity church auditorium.
Wife
Kumuyi met his first wife, Abiodun Olowu, in September 1972. She later became one of his Bible students and a member of his growing Christian ministry. The couple married in Lagos on 13 September 1980 and had two children together. Abiodun Kumuyi died on 11 April 2009. The DCLM church described Abiodun as an “energetic, dynamic and visionary woman, Abiodun Kumuyi, who was fondly called Mummy or Mama by members of the church, spear-headed the establishment of the Christian Women Mirror magazine.”
On 13 October 2010, exactly 18 months after the death of his first wife, Abiodun, Kumuyi married Folashade Adenike Blaize as his new wife in London. Folashade was the Administrator of the Deeper Life Bible Church in London. The couple has lived happily since.
