Born on May 28, 1944, Rudolph William Louis Giuliani is an American politician and attorney who led New York City as its 107th mayor from 1994 to 2001. Prior to this, he held the positions of United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York from 1983 to 1989 and Associate Attorney General of the United States from 1981 to 1983.

Giuliani established Giuliani Partners, a security consulting company, in 2002. He also bought Giuliani Capital Advisors, an investment banking company, however he later sold it. He joined a law company in 2005 that was later renamed Bracewell & Giuliani.

In April 2018, Giuliani became a member of President Donald Trump’s personal legal team, having previously counseled him throughout his campaign and early administration in 2016.

His alleged participation in corruption and profiteering, as well as his propagation of conspiracy theories—most notably about the 2018 and 2020 elections—have brought his activities as Trump’s lawyer under increased public scrutiny.

Rudy is the sole child of working-class parents Harold Angelo Giuliani (1908–1981) and Helen D’Avanzo (1909–2002), both of whom are descended from Italian immigrants. Given that his paternal grandparents, Rodolfo and Evangelina Giuliani, were born in Montecatini Terme, Tuscany, Italy, Giuliani has Tuscan ancestry on his father’s side.

He had a Roman Catholic upbringing. His father, Plumber and bartender, Harold Giuliani, struggled to find employment, was found guilty of felony assault and robbery, and was sent to Sing Sing jail. After being freed, he served as an enforcer for his brother-in-law Leo D’Avanzo, who ran a gambling and loan sharking enterprise out of a Brooklyn restaurant that was connected to organized crime.

Up to his death in 1981 from prostate cancer, Harold and his spouse resided in East Flatbush.

Political Career

From 1994 until 2001, Giuliani presided as mayor of New York City. After stepping down as mayor, Giuliani has continued to be involved in politics by supporting Republican contenders for all kinds of office. Giuliani launched Solutions America in June 2006 in an effort to support Republican candidates being elected around the country.

Giuliani declared in November 2006 that an exploratory committee will be established in preparation for his 2008 presidential campaign. He submitted a “statement of candidacy” in February 2007 and declared his candidacy during an appearance on Larry King Live.

On January 12, 2017, Giuliani was appointed by Trump as his informal cybersecurity adviser. Giuliani claimed to have given President Trump advice in January 2017 regarding Executive Order 13769, which restricted citizens of seven nations with a majority of Muslims from entering the country for ninety days.

Giuliani joined Trump’s legal team in the middle of April 2018, taking on the role of special counsel investigating Robert Mueller’s probe into Russian meddling in the 2016 US elections.  He was indicted together with eighteen other individuals on August 14, 2023, in connection with the Georgia 2020 election prosecution. On August 23, 2023, Giuliani was placed under arrest; a mugshot was then made public.

Education

Giuliani’s family relocated from Brooklyn to Garden City South when he was seven years old, and he went to St. Anne’s Catholic school there. He later made the long journey from Brooklyn to Bishop Loughlin Memorial High School, from which he graduated in 1961.

Giuliani studied political science with a philosophy minor at Manhattan College in Riverdale, Bronx, and he thought about becoming a priest there. He became a member of the honor society and forensic fraternity of Phi Rho Pi college.

In 1965, he received his diploma. Giuliani made the decision to forgo the priesthood in favor of attending the Manhattan-based New York University School of Law, where he participated in the NYU Law Review and earned a Juris Doctor degree with honors in 1968.

Businesses

In 2002, Giuliani established Giuliani Partners LLC, a security consulting firm, following his resignation from the mayor’s office of New York City. He left his position as Giuliani Partners’ chairman and CEO in June 2007, however this was not announced until December 4 of that same year.

In January 2020, Giuliani launched his podcast, Rudy Giuliani’s Common Sense.
