Nigerian economist and philanthropist Anthony Onyemaechi Elumelu CFR was born on March 22, 1963. He founded The Tony Elumelu Foundation and serves as chairman of Transcorp and Heirs Holdings. Elumelu was included in Time magazine’s list of the 100 most influential people in the world in 2020. As Group Managing Director, Elumelu oversaw the 2005 merger of Standard Trust Bank and United Bank for Africa, transforming the organization from a single-country banking group to a pan-African bank with divisions in 20 African nations, France, the United States, and the United Kingdom. Elumelu eventually stepped down in 2010 and now serves as the United Bank for Africa’s board chair.
