Best 20 Nigerian Online Newspapers

Before now, newspapers and magazines were in their traditional legacy bags, printed monthly, daily, weekly, etc, depending on what the publishers have decided on. With the coming of the Internet and the creation of content management systems like WordPress, Blogger, Wix, etc, newspapers have made the migration to the web.

Now, in Nigeria and elsewhere, it is almost impossible to point to a newspaper worth the name that does not have an online presence. These publications have long recognised the importance of being online and they have made the shift accordingly.

of course, some newspapers never had print versions at the outset. They started online and remain online, with zero interest in having print versions. This is understandable as it reduces the costs of production. There would never be a need for paper, ink, and other necessary materials that print newspapers cannot do without.

Of course, there are newspapers and there are newspapers. Some are worth the name while others are nothing more than musty reservoirs of solecism and un-factuality.

Out of the throbbing mass of newspapers out there, we bring you what we consider the best 20 Nigerian online newspapers, and we are confident that our list will resonate with you. Of course, the list has been given in no particular order. Now look ahead and let’s roll!

1. The Punch

Easily one of the oldest newspapers in Nigeria, The Puch was founded by Olu Aboderin and remains one of the best newspapers in Nigeria to this day. It is also one of the best-edited newspapers in the country as well, serving the generation population with business news, entertainment news, foreign news, arts and culture news and so much more. It is one newspaper we are more than happy and ready to recommend. Yes!

2. Vanguard

Here, if you please, is another oldie in the trenches of Nigerian journalism. Sadly, unlike The Punch, Vanguard has lost its glory years. Years back, before the Internet and online journalism became a fad, Vanguard newspaper was well-edited. Now, it is a doddering, linguistic embarrassment: You can’t point to one news story – and i mean just ONE – without one error or the other. It is becoming the sentinel of solecism street.

3. The Guardian

We may have passed the era of Patrick Dele Cole and Stanley Macebuh, but The Guardian has managed to maintain its sinews. Yes. Unlike Vanguard, which has apparently gone to seed, The Guardian is still standing strong linguistically in its print and online versions.

We are more than chuffed to point to The Guardian as one of the best-edited Nigerian newspapers – in the same league as The Punch.

4. ThisDay

Chief Nduka Obaigbena’s baby, ThisDay has been around for a while. It originally started out as a print newspaper but embraced the web along the line.

5. Daily Trust

Daily Trust is based in Abuja and stands out as one of the better-edited newspapers in the country. It also has a vibrant literary department.

6. The Nation

The Nation is owned by Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who was recently “elected” as president of Nigeria in an “election” rife with rigging and just too embarrassing for the name. The Nation reports but national and international news but the editing is patently embarrassing. The newspaper has a pronounced quarrel with the comma

7. Leadership

Leadership newspaper is not exactly about leadership. While the newspaper is not perfect, it beats several others – including The Nation – in the editing department.

8. Nigerian Tribune

Founded by Obafemi Awolowo, Nigerian Tribune is easily one of the oldest newspapers in the country, bringing political, social and economic news into the orbit of its fans.

9. The Sun

The Sun is owned by Orji Kalu, a Nigerian senator. The newspaper has been around for several years. It is known for its occasional sensationalism as well as its vibrant literary department.

10. Daily Post Nigeria

Daily Post has a strong online presence and brings the daily happenings around Nigeria to those keen to stay in the loop of knowledge.

11. New Telegraph

NewTelegrapgh is another notable Nigerian newspaper and one we are sure you would have no qualms checking out. While it is not the oldest in the country, it is still a publication of merit.

12. Business Day

True to its name, Business Da is focused on business but also covers other verticals relating to business, including politics. We readily point to it as being among those newspapers where a lot goes into the editing. Yup!

13. National Mirror

A mirror reflects things to you, including yourself – if you should stare at it. Nigeria’s National Mirror newspaper does exactly that, bringing the many issues of the nation to those who would see them. The publication started out as print but embraced the digital space soon after.

14. Daily Independent

Daily Independent is a daily newspaper that started out with print versions but pivoted to the online realm while still maintaining its print version.

15. Nigerian Observer

The Nigerian Observer does exactly what its name says it observes and then serves its observation hot, from politics to finance to arts and culture. You name it.

16. The Nigerian Voice

The Nigerian Voice is another notable platform that has been around for a while. It has also been the voice of many, as it is easier to publish op-eds there than in other places.

17. The Nigerian Pilot

This Pilot is not exactly focused on the aerospace industry. On the contrary, you might want to imagine The Nigerian Pilot as a newspaper that pilots you into the realms of several sectors of the economy and even the orbit of international news.

18. The Cable

Founded by Simon KOlawole, The Cable is another beautifully edited newspaper in Nigeria, serving the news hot, from politics to entertainment right down to fashion and society – you name it.

19. Premium Times

Premium Times stands out as another Nigerian newspaper that is actually well-edited. It is the brainchild of veteran journalists and stands out for its investigative reporting that has earned it and some of its staff members commendations from around the world.

20. Sahara Reporters

Sahara Reporters, which has Omoyele Sowore as its founder, has been around for several years. It stands out for several reasons, including as the source of several important breaking news about Nigeria and its political class. A major failing of this media house is its shoddy editing. The grasp of the comma at Sahara Reporters is patently poor.
