Abdullahi Adamu Resigns As APC Chairman, Secretary Follows Suit Amidst NWC Concerns

In the news making rounds in the political space, Sen. Abdullahi Adamu, the All Progressives Congress (APC) National Chairman, resigned from his position as party chairman on Sunday, so it appears that not all is well in the APC camp. According to media reports, Sen. Adamu reportedly left his position at the President’s request. Iyiola Omisore, the party’s national secretary, submitted his resignation immediately after. Adamu, the former governor of Nasarawa State, has faced much opposition as party leader since the party won the presidential election on February 25, 2023.

On Sunday, July 16, Prime Business Africa (PBA) released a statement regarding the development in which it stated that it had received the unvarnished affirmation that Adamu had “resigned a few minutes ago on the orders of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu” from trustworthy sources within the ruling party and the Presidency. However, to prepare for the July 18 and July 19 Caucus and National Executive Committee (NEC) sessions, the embattled former Chairman set the National Working Committee (NWC) meeting for July 19.

What happens to the meeting initially scheduled for today is currently up for speculation. Remember that the APC originally planned to hold the same NWC, Caucus, and NEC meetings last week but changed the dates due to internal disputes and intra-party politics to July 17, 18, and 19. According to information obtained by PBA on Sunday night, the National Working Committee (NWC) and President’s meetings were reportedly postponed at Senator Adamu’s request. Additionally, it was reliably reported that all NWC members “are on the same page” about the National Chairman’s and his Secretary Omisore’s mandatory resignation.

The party’s 2022 Account audit, which the NWC members claim was “covertly secured and submitted without any of the members sighting it,” is another matter that upsets the NWC members. They argue that the lack of transparency surrounding the audit raises concerns about potential mismanagement of party funds. Additionally, the NWC members demand a thorough investigation into how the audit was obtained and submitted without their knowledge or consent.
