SZA Didn’t Expect “Snooze” To Be A Hit Song

SZA, the R&B superstar, crushed the “sophomore slump” with her album SOS, which was a massive success. Despite her initial reservations, SZA admits that “Snooze” is her favourite song from the album. This song won the Grammy for Best R&B Song and peaked at number two on the Billboard Hot 100. It also broke the record for the most weeks atop the US R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay chart with 30 weeks.

Interestingly, “Snooze” almost didn’t make it onto the album. The song was initially intended for Babyface’s album, Girls Night Out. However, SZA’s collaboration with Babyface during a studio session transformed “Snooze” into a hit song. Producer Leon Thomas revealed that Babyface walked in and out of the room and laid down some parts. They created the beat on the same day, and SZA recorded the song on the same day.

The spontaneity that produced “Snooze” also led to the creation of an iconic music video. During a FaceTime call with Hailey Baldwin and Justin Bieber, SZA asked Bieber if he wanted to be in the video. Without hesitation, Bieber agreed and showed up for the shoot. SZA is working on her follow-up album, Lana, which includes unused songs from the SOS recording sessions. Fans eagerly anticipate this album’s release, and it’s sure to be another massive success.
