R. Kelly’s Child Pornography Judgment Sustained In Chicago

It looks likely that the disgraced American singer, R. Kelly, will spend the rest of his life behind bars after an appellate court upheld his conviction for child pornography in Chicago. A medium-security jail in North Carolina is housing the disgraced musician, according to records from the Bureau of Prisons. He is not expected to be freed until 2045, when he will be 78 years old.

In addition, the Chicago Sun-Times notes that as of Friday, April 26, the 2022 verdict that found him guilty of the felony was affirmed. It is unknown if Kelly will have another chance to file an appeal. Since his relocation from Chicago in December 2023, R. Kelly has been serving his term at the FCI Butner jail.

Jennifer Bonjean, the musician’s lawyer, asserted last month that a statute that was utilized to imprison the artist might classify college fraternities as racketeering organizations. His conviction on three charges of child enticement and three counts of child pornography brought him before the law.

In an effort to overturn R. Kelly’s 2021 convictions or secure a new trial, Bonjean attempted to convince courts that prosecutors had incorrectly pursued him under a racketeering legislation intended to combat organized crime.

Kelly was accused of being the head of a Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organization (RICO) from 1994 to 2018, but she argued that the charges were unjust.
