Senegalese-American, Singer Akon was asked to pick between Davido and Burna Boy, two legendary figures in the Nigerian music scene. He was asked to decide between the two during a recent interview with N.O.R.E. and DJ EFN on the Drink Champs podcast, and he immediately chose Davido. Reiterating his admiration for Davido, Akon called the Nigerian singer “a beast” and said he deserved more praise and acclaim than he has received. To quote him:

“I would probably go with Davido. Oh David, that kid right there is a beast, he’s the beast, he’s another one I think that deserves more flowers than he’s received”

This comes months after the American music legend praised Nigerian musicians Wizkid, Davido, and Burna Boy for their contributions to the internationalization of Afrobeats. In an interview with well-known American radio host Sway, the American star referred to Wizkid as a Superstar and a Born Star and said he is the “face of Afrobeat” and one of the biggest names in the business. He said,

“Wizkid is just a superstar, he is one of those guys that put up one record a year, and the record lasts a whole year. He is a born star without a doubt”.

In his assessment of Davido, Akon noted that the head of the DMW label had overcome many obstacles to reach his current position and attributed his success to coming from a well-to-do family.

“So, Davido was the underdog. But he had the support of a wealthy family, so he could come up every week with a new song, a new video. So he just kept coming. He has more songs than any Afrobeats.” “He beats the others with quantity versus quality. So he had his method… Everybody has their method.”

Calling Burna Boy “a beast,” Akon spoke of the African Giant, too, saying,

“Burna Boy is a beast; he’s representing the culture on a level it needs to be represented on”.
