ID Cabasa Lambasts Artists’ Use Of Overtly Explicit Contents In Lyrics And Drug Abuse Indulgences

According to veteran record producer Olumide Ogunade, who is also known as ID Cabasa, most Nigerian artists who are parents do not want their children to listen to their music. In a recent episode of The Honest Bunch Podcast, hosted by actor Chinedu Ani Emmanuel (Nedu), Cabasa and Sexy Steel discussed trends in the industry, such as drug abuse and the use of profanity in music. Cabasa mentioned during the interview that many Nigerian musicians need to produce explicit content to gain fame and make a living in the highly competitive music industry.

He emphasized that most musicians make music to support themselves and said that most do not want their kids to hear their songs due to their graphic nature. He was worried about how this might affect present-day kids, especially as they try to protect them from the sexual content of their work. According to Cabasa, this reflects the problem that artists must continuously balance their artistic expression with family obligations.

He said:

“I can tell you that most artists in Nigeria that you see, they don’t want their kids to actually listen to their own songs. And don’t blame them. I don’t like apportioning blames because they people funding . A lot of us are doing this thing for survival. So, the question is how do you balance who you are with who they want you to be?”
