Israel Adesanya Pleas Guilty To Drunk-Driving Charge; Risks Three Months Jail Sentencing

Israel Adesanya recently entered a plea to a drunk driving charge and now faces a sentence of up to three months in jail. Three weeks before his defeat by Sean Strickland at UFC 293, the incident reportedly occurred on August 19. According to reports, Adesanya had 87 milligrams of alcohol in his system for every 100 millilitres of blood, which was higher than the permissible limit of 50 milligrams. Although the legal barrier is 50 milligrams, it is essential to note that the threshold for being charged is 80 milligrams.

According to The New Zealand Herald, Israel Adesanya could be sentenced to up to three months in prison or a $4500 fine, which has confirmed that more information about the case is awaited. Adesanya stated to The New Zealand Herald after entering a guilty plea at the Auckland District Court and stated:
“I want to apologize to the community, my family and my team for the decision I made to get behind the wheel after drinking at dinner. I was pulled over and gave an evidentiary blood test, the reading was 87 milligrams of alcohol per 100 milliliters of blood. I am disappointed with my decision to drive, It was wrong. I know that people might follow me and I want them to know I do not think this behavior is acceptable.”

At UFC 293 earlier this month, “The Last Stylebender” faced off against Sean Strickland. Despite having the massive advantage of being the favourite, Adesanya ultimately lost the fight unanimously, forfeiting his middleweight title in the process. Sean Strickland defeated Israel Adesanya by unanimous decision, but not before coming extremely close to doing so in the first round.
