Rema Opens Up On His Eyesight Impairment

Afrobeats singer, Divine Ikubor, better known as Rema, recently revealed a personal detail that has piqued the interest of many of his admirers.

The Calm Down hit-maker revealed the rationale for his unique eyewear in an exclusive interview with Capital Xtra during the prestigious red carpet event of the 2024 Brit Awards held in London, United Kingdom on Saturday, March 2, 2024. The host took advantage of the conversation to ask personal questions and pressure Rema to divulge information about himself that he had never done before.

The question caused Rema to pause for a moment before he openly acknowledged, “I use glasses. I’m suffering from long-sightedness.”

Hyperopia, another name for long-sightedness, is a frequent refractive error in which one can see farther away objects more clearly than those that are closer. Rema’s admission illuminates his emotional struggles that lie beneath the flash and glamour of the music business. The Nigerian-born singer-songwriter is open about his health issues despite his quick ascent to prominence.

With the help of an incredible band, Rema performed his blockbuster song “Calm Down” at the 2024 BRIT Awards. This song currently holds the record for being the highest-charting African song on the UK Singles Chart, peaking at number three. Additionally, Rema was one of the Nigerian nominees for the 2024 BRIT Awards. His song “Calm Down” was nominated for International Song of the Year, however it was defeated by Miley Cyrus’s “Flowers.”
