Spotify Offers Users In Specific Markets Access To Music Videos

Spotify is adding music videos to its desktop and mobile applications in 11 global markets, including Kenya. According to Spotify, the function will strengthen the bond between fans and artists and will be made accessible in beta to premium customers. It also added that Spotify will continue to “innovate and iterate based on user and artist feedback.”

The first release has a small song library that includes hits by international musicians including Ed Sheeran, Ice Spice, and Doja Cat in addition to Nigerian Afrobeats sensation Asake. Music videos can be accessed by Premium Spotify users by going to their PC, TV, iOS, or Android device and changing the Switch to Video option for tracks that are supported.

Playing the music video in the Now Playing window is started by this action. It is sufficient for users to press Switch to Audio in order to return to background listening.  Many streaming services have long included music videos, with YouTube and Apple Music being two of the early adopters of this format.

Prior to its removal in March 2023, Amazon Music had included music videos as well as other content in December 2020. As for Spotify, the company projects reaching 618 million monthly active users, $194 million in operational profitability, and $3.8 billion in total revenue in its Q1 2024 estimate.
