“The Black Book” Has Now Become The Most-Watched African Film On Netflix

The Nigerian film and music industries continue to make inroads around the world. Nollywood has progressed from local settings to blockbuster films nearly comparable to the iconic John Wick franchise.

The Black Book is a Nigerian thriller set in Lagos and Kaduna about a devastated father who tries everything in his power to avenge the death of his son, who was unfairly murdered and accused of kidnapping. The movie came out on September 22, 2023, and has become the most-watched African film on Netflix since its inception. Furthermore, the Black Book ranked top on Netflix globally during its first week of release.

The movie received 17 million views and was ranked in 69 nations’ top 10. The crime thriller had 3.7 million views overall between October 2, 2023, and October 8, 2023, for a total of 7.7 million hours of viewing. The number of hours watched decreased from 21.3 million hours from 11.2 million total views between September 25, 2023 and October 1, 2023, when it was in third place in its second week of release.
