The C.J. Obasi-Directed “Mami Wata” Receives A 2024 Film Independent Spirit Awards Nomination For Best International Film

The 2024 Film Independent Spirit Awards have nominated C.J. Obasi’s West African folklore film “Mami Wata” for “Best International Film.” The Nigerian filmmaker announced the news on his official Instagram page, expressing his immense gratitude for the international recognition.

Leading up to this, the Nigerian Official Selection Committee (NOSC) had selected “Mami Wata” as Nigeria’s entry for the “Best International Feature Film” category in October 2023. The movie had enjoyed its debut at Sundance 2023, becoming Obasi’s third feature film to screen at the festival. It was also chosen to be included in the final cut of the 78th La Biennale di Venezia Venice Film Festival in 2021.

Evelyne Ily Juhen, Uzoamaka Aniunoh, Kelechi Udegbe, Emeka Amakeze, Rita Edochie, Tough Bone, and Jakob Kerstan are among the outstanding cast members of “Mami Wata.” In addition, the movie received numerous nominations for the 2023 Africa Movie Academy Awards (AMAA), including Best Achievement in Make-Up, Best Actress in a Supporting Role, and Best Achievement in Costume Design.

Furthermore, this holiday season, the black-and-white film will also have its last showing of the year. Via a recent tweet, Obasi announced that “Mami Wata” would have a special screening this Saturday, December 9, at the Surreal 16 Film Festival in Lagos.
