Two-day Academic Conference On Taylor Swift Holds At University Of Melbourne Ahead Of Australia Leg Of Eras Tour

In February 2024, The University of Melbourne has rolled out the red carpet for Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour concerts in the city by hosting a two-day academic conference called ‘Swiftposium.’ The meeting is a remarkable and unique blend of educational and pop culture. It celebrated Taylor Swift’s life, career, and immense popularity, transcending just music. The conference was held on the university’s campus from February 11 to February 13, drawing attention from across the globe. The Swiftposium website stated that about 400 academic papers were submitted from 78 universities worldwide, and only 130 were accepted. Researchers from diverse disciplines, including gender studies, musicology, economics, urban planning, and medicine, participated in the conference.

Attendees critically discussed Swift’s popularity and its profound implications for various issues. The conference covered a wide range of topics, including Swift’s feud with Kanye West, the feminism of her lyrics, her songs’ use of CPR, and her ongoing battle with graphic deepfake images. The Swiftposium also hosted a keynote address by Dr. Georgia Carroll, who published a thesis on fandom communities like Swift’s in 2023.

Hannah McCann, a senior lecturer in cultural studies and Swiftposium organizer, expressed her excitement about academics from all over the world applying their expertise and critical lens to this crazy phenomenon. She tweeted about the event and applauded the scholars for their contributions. The conference was only open to academics, but the nearby RMIT University hosted a ‘Fanposium’ on February 11, where fans and the public could gather for offshoot Swiftposium events. The conference was a prelude to the Australian leg of Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour, which begins with a three-night run at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on February 16. The shows are predicted to draw the biggest-ever crowds of Swift’s career, followed by four concerts in Sydney. The Australian leg of the tour wraps up at Accor Stadium on February 26.
