Veteran Yoruba Actress, Iyabo Oko, Has Passed On

Sidikat Odunkanwi, also known as Iyabo Oko, a veteran Yoruba actress, has died. The 62-year-old actress, who was well-known in the Yoruba film industry, had been battling illness for some years but had seemingly healed. She was claimed to have died on Wednesday, June 28, 2023.

According to her star daughter, Bisi Aisha, on her Facebook page, Iyabo Oko died on Wednesday evening. Last year, the actress was speculated to be dead for several days when Bisi Aisha revealed that her mother was still alive. Foluke Daramola-Salako, a popular actress known for honouring elderly actors and looking after their well-being, has also confirmed Iyabo Oko’s death.

The veteran was born on November 15, 1960, in the present-day Osun State’s Iwo Local Government Area. Sidikat went by the stage names “Iyabo Oko,” “Apoti Aje,” and “Sisi Mama.” Olamide, one of her children, said last year that her mother was diagnosed with an ischemic stroke roughly five years ago but kept her health difficulties private.

Her colleagues, including Yoruba movie actresses Iyabo Ojo, Bolaji Amusan, Mercy Aigbe, Foluke Daramola, and Biodun Okeowo, have previously helped her financially. This is the second fatality in the Yoruba film business in recent months, as Murphy Afolabi, Odukanwi’s younger colleague, died a few weeks ago.
