Rema Gives Rousing VMA Acceptance Speech; Renders Special Shout-out To Afrobeat Greats Fela, Davido, WizKid, Burna Boy, Others
Since entering the public eye, Rema has become one of Nigeria’s most famous musicians whose music is introducing the world to Afrobeats. Rema made history by winning the inaugural award for Best Afrobeats at this year’s MTV Video Music Awards. He sincerely thanked the luminaries who helped make the path for his ground-breaking success during his victory speech. Rema defeated Davido, Burna Boy, Wizkid, Ayra Starr, Libianca, Fireboy, and Asake to win the Best Afrobeats award at the 2023 VMAs held on September 12, 2023.
During his award speech, Rema acknowledged the musicians whose work has helped Afrobeats develop. He said,
“I’m so excited for Africa, this is huge for us,”.
Rema mentioned the afrobeats pioneers who paved the way for the next wave of African talent, including Fela Kuti, Don Jazzy, D’Prince, WizKid, Davido, and Burna Boy. Rema complimented these musicians for working so diligently for many years to bring afrobeats from Nigeria to the international scene. He claimed his victory was a personal and collective triumph for African music. He noted the pioneers who created the distinctive afrobeats sound, including Fela and others, were responsible for making the victory possible.
While he acknowledges that he is standing on the shoulders of those giants, the young star demonstrates maturity and character beyond his years. His VMA triumph ensures that Afrobeats’ incredible surge will continue for years. The first Afrobeats song to achieve one billion Spotify plays, “Calm Down,” propelled Rema to international stardom and established him as the front-runner to advance Afrobeats.
He concluded by expressing his gratitude to the afrobeats supporters who helped bring the genre into popular culture for their support. He then gave a fiery performance of his hit song “Calm Down,” stirring up the crowd. Rema’s Best Afrobeats Award is a significant occasion for the genre.
