Vevo Reports A 56% Increase In Afrobeats And Ampiano Views Worldwide

The global viewing of Afrobeats and Amapiano videos increased by 56% in 2023, with 61% of the views coming from outside of Africa, according to American video hosting company Vevo.

As reported by Music Business Worldwide, a recent research from analytics firm Chartmetric confirms this and also reveals that the cumulative views for various genres have exceeded 4 billion globally. The two most popular music genres in Africa are amapiano and afrobeats, which gave rise to some of the continent’s most prominent pop singers.

These musicians are mainly from South Africa and Nigeria, where the sounds originated. Previous years have seen the service predict international success for South African singer Tyla and Nigerian celebrities Ayra Starr and Oxlade.

Vevo’s senior manager of music and talent in the UK, Jodeci Rampasard, responded to the spike in views by saying that the overwhelming impact they have witnessed in the US and European music scenes is unprecedented. Cross-genre partnerships between Afrobeats and Amapiano musicians are another area Vevo sees as having significant growth potential.

Sub-Saharan Africa exceeded 20% growth as sales increased by 24.7%, with South Africa accounting for 77.0% of revenues thanks to its 19.9% gain, according to IFPI’s 2024 Global Music Report. It can only be up and up for both dominating African music genres as they continue to sweep across the world.
