YNW Melly Double Murder Retrial Delayed Again; No Clear Restart Date Announced

The retrial of YNW Melly for double murder has been rescheduled once more, and there don’t appear to be any concrete plans regarding when it will begin. HipHopDX got court documents showing the rapper “Murder on My Mind” appeared in a Broward County court on Friday, January 12, for a defense motions hearing to dismiss the case. The prosecution, understandably, objected and filed its objections. These documents disclosed that jury selection in the case would not start until March—the month the trial was most recently rescheduled. As of this writing, no specific date is set for the retrial because the trial cannot begin until the jury selection procedure is finished. During this delay, the defence is expected to perform the required depositions and interviews with various witnesses.

In October 2018, YNW Melly was suspected of planning with YNW Bortlen to murder their two pals, YNW Sakchaser (Anthony Williams) and YNW Juvy (Christopher Thomas Jr.), and fake their murders as a drive-by shooting. During YNW Melly’s court appearance last month, Judge John Murphy granted the “Murder on My Mind” rapper’s plea for a continuance. The team did not begin the 180-day statutory minimum in Florida by waiving YNW Melly’s right to a speedy trial in that continuance. In addition, over fifty tracks have been admitted into evidence by the prosecution to use the lyrics to songs like “Murder on My Mind” against the rapper in the jury trial that will eventually take place. Raven Liberty, Melly’s lawyer, has tried to prevent the rapper’s lyrics from being introduced into evidence at his retrial. In October, Melly, YNW Bortlen, his co-defendant, and Terrence Mathis were charged with leading a criminal gang, using a two-way communication device illegally, soliciting and conspiring to tamper, and all three of these offences. These charges are in addition to Melly’s (actual name: Jamell Demons) and Bortlen’s (real name: Cortlen Henry’s) initial count of interfering with a witness in a capital offence. YNW Melly might get the death penalty if he is found guilty.
