On the way to the African Movie Academy Awards in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, Nigeria, in April 2005, Okereke was hurt badly in a car accident, breaking her leg and suffering burns. She was rushed to the hospital and received treatment, and there were no complaints of life being lost.
