Cordae Biography

Cordae Amari Dunston, known as Cordae (formerly YBN Cordae and Entendre), is an American rapper, singer, and songwriter. He gained popularity by releasing remixes of popular songs, including “My Name Is” by Eminem and “Old Niggas”, a response to the song “1985” by J. Cole. He uploaded videos of both remixes to WorldStarHipHop’s YouTube channel, leading to a massive and immediate positive response from the online rap community and the media.

Cordae’s debut album, “The Lost Boy,” was released in 2019. It received wide acclaim. It also received two nominations for Best Rap Album and Best Rap Song for the single “Bad Idea” at the 62nd Grammy Awards. From 2018, he was a member of the YBN collective until 2019, when he quit the group. He dropped the “YBN” from his stage name after leaving the group.

Cordae’s album starts with “Shiloh’s Intro,” where Simba freestyles over the phone from prison. In N interview with GRAMMY.com, Cordae said, “Well, for one, that’s my brother Shiloh. He’s in prison right now, serving a 24-year sentence. He used to rap, and we used to rap all the time together, and I felt like it was necessary, but also dope from the creative side, to include him on the intro for the album to shed some light on him and his situation.”

“It also kind of put the pieces [of the album] together because he’s seeing things from a bird’s eye view perspective — more so from a caged bird’s perspective, if you would. I think it starts [the album] off beautifully,” he said.
