In 2004, Matthew began playing music with his friends Ross MacDonald, Adam Hann, and George Daniel at Wilmslow High School, where he was a student. Before beginning to compose their songs at around 15, they started out playing punk-rock and pop covers. Their primary songwriter, Matthew, created their distinctive style and poignant lyrics. Before settling on the name “The 1975,” they performed under the titles “Me and You Versus Them,” “Drive Like I Do,” “TALKHOUSE!” and “The Big Sleep.” This was done under the management of Jamie Oborne.

Healy struggled in school and graduated with three GCSEs. He did not want to continue his education because he saw it as a barrier to his ability to make music. His mother insisted he attend music college but he only stayed for three months. He accepted a job at a Chinese restaurant to supplement his income while he was busy creating songs. He developed a cocaine addiction, which took him a long time to overcome.

Healy was initially ‘The 1975’s’ original drummer. After the band’s lead singer quit to start his band, he later assumed the roles of lead singer and guitarist. Ross MacDonald played bass, George Daniel played drums, and Adam Hann played lead guitar for the group. In 2012, they released their first EP, “Facedown,” which was played on local radio stations and featured the smash tune “The City” on BBC Radio 1. They were first surprised by their popularity because they were only interested in making music as a hobby. However, the response they received from fans inspired them to start treating their vocation more seriously. ‘Sex,’ their second EP, and ‘Chocolate,’ a single that peaked at number 19 on the UK Singles Chart, were released in the same year. By this time, “The 1975” had established themselves and were getting ready to release their debut record.
Their debut album, released in 2013, debuted at the top of the UK Albums Chart. It featured a cover of their song “Sex,” which debuted on Zane Lowe’s BBC Radio 1. Additionally, it made its YouTube debut and acquired a sizable fan base. During this time, Matthew and his bandmates traveled to Ireland and the USA as part of a worldwide tour to promote the album. Additionally, they made a tour of the UK and performed at several festivals, including one at the Royal Albert Hall. The group was recognized and allowed to serve in Hyde Park in July 2013 alongside the “Rolling Stones.”

They experienced new success with their second and third albums, “I Like It When You Sleep, For You Are So Beautiful Yet So Unaware Of It” and “Music for Cars.” Both albums were on the US Billboard 200 and at the top of the UK Albums Chart. The albums stood out from their contemporaries because each song was performed uniquely.
The band launched their famous song “The Sound” in 2016, along with a digital music video. Social media user Matthew Healy maintains a sizable personal fan base. ‘I Like It When You Sleep, For You Are So Beautiful Yet So Unaware’ received ‘The Best Album’ at the 2016 UK Music ‘Q’ Awards. His band also received the BBC’s “Radio 1 Live Lounge Performance of the Year” honor that same year for their song “What Makes You Beautiful.” The band won “Best Live Band” at the NME Awards and “Best British Group” at the Brit Awards the following year.
