On January 15, 1981, Cuban immigrant parents gave birth to Armando Christian Pérez in Miami, Florida. His parents insisted that he “take advantage” of the privileges of being an American citizen while growing up. He could recite the poetry of José Marti in Spanish when he was just three years old and is considered the national poet of Cuba. Watching Sesame Street as a child helped him to learn English.

He was raised primarily by his mother after his parents divorced when he was a little boy; he later said, “My mom is my father and my mother.” His father was generally absent from his infancy. He spent a short time in Roswell, Georgia, with a foster family. He was involved in drug usage and dealing as a youngster, which led to him being expelled from the family home. His parents struggled with substance misuse. He went to Miami Coral Park High School and South Miami Senior High School.
