Tory Lanez Biography
Daystar Shemuel Shua Peterson, professionally known as Tory Lanez, is a Canadian rapper, singer, songwriter, and record producer. Peterson first gained prominence following the release of the mixtape Conflicts of My Soul: The 416 Story in August 2013. In 2015, Lanez signed to record producer Benny Blanco’s Mad Love Records through Interscope Records. His debut album, “I Told You,” was released in 2016. The album contained the tracks “Say It” and “Luv.” They peaked at numbers 23 and 19 on the Billboard Hot 100. He received a Grammy nomination for the song.
Lanez released his second and third studio albums “Memories Don’t Die” and “Love Me Now?” in 2018. His fourth studio album, “Chixtape 5,” released in 2019, peaked at number two on the Billboard 200. In 2020, he released his fifth studio album, “Daystar,” which debuted at number 10 on the Billboard 200. The album featured controversial responses to his allegations of shooting fellow rapper Megan Thee Stallion that year.
Daystar was convicted in the Los Angeles County Superior Court on December 23, 2022. He was convicted of three charges in relation to his attack on Megan Thee Stallion in 2020. They include assault with a semi-automatic firearm; having a loaded, unregistered firearm in a vehicle; and discharging a firearm with gross negligence. Daystar was sent to jail after his conviction. He faces up to 22 years in prison.

Lanez was arrested in the Hollywood Hills after leaving a house party hosted by Kylie Jenner, where an argument resulted in violence. He was charged with carrying a concealed weapon in his vehicle. Following reports that rapper Megan Thee Stallion (who was in the car with him) had glass wounds, she disputed the claims in an Instagram post “gunshot wounds, as a result of a crime committed against me and done with the intention to physically harm me.” In an Instagram Live feed, Megan accused Tory of shooting her “You shot me, and you got your publicist and your people going to these blogs lyin’ and shit. Stop lyin’. Why lie?”
On December 23, 2022, Tory was convicted in a jury trial on three felony charges with respect to the shooting: assault with a semiautomatic handgun, having a loaded and unregistered firearm in a vehicle, and gross negligence in discharging his firearm. A sentencing hearing is set for January 27, 2023.

Daystar’s father is Bajan. He is named Sonstar Peterson. Sonstar is an ordained minister and missionary with a good following on social media. After the death of his first wife, Tory’s mother, Sonstar began working as an ordained minister and missionary, causing them to move around a lot throughout the United States. He later remarried and moved the family to Atlanta, Georgia, where Tory met his friend, Hakeem, who worked as a janitor at the time. His father sent him to live with his cousin Dahir Abib, Orane Forrest, in Jamaica, Queens, New York, because of his behavior issues in 2006.
Sonstar came out in support of his son during his trial for the shooting, which involved rapper Megan Thee Stallion. Associated Press reported that he was heard shouting in the courtroom, saying: “This wicked system stands judged before God almighty!”
