Governor Obaseki Plans To Increase Internet Connectivity By Laying Fiber Optic Cables Between Edo Councils

The 18 Local Government Areas (LGAs) of Edo State will be connected with fiber optic cables as part of a new partnership between the governor of the state of Edo and the data center and ICT infrastructure company Geniserve Limited. This will improve internet connectivity throughout the state. At the official partnership document signing ceremony held at Government House in Benin City, Obaseki stated that the government’s goal with the agreement is to deploy around 2,000 km of fiber optic connectivity throughout the state.

He noted that hotspots would be established across a number of villages in the State, claiming that the agreement would guarantee that the majority of schools and primary healthcare facilities in the state are connected to the internet. The government, according to him, would ensure that the majority of primary healthcare facilities are connected and would expand services, especially telemedicine services for residents of remote areas.

For his part, Mr. Tunde Famoroti, a representative of Geniserve Limited, praised the state government for the collaboration and mentioned that the project included the installation of fiber optic cables across Edo’s 18 LGAs as well as schools for agriculture and nursing, among other things. The President of the Benin Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture (BENCCIMA), Mrs. Aina Omo-Ojeonu, passed away, and Obaseki has expressed its condolences.
