Blackberry Smoke’s Drummer, Brit Turner, Passes Away At 57

Blackberry Smoke, a well-known Southern rock band, revealed on social media that Brit Turner, their drummer, has passed away at the age of 57.

He had been diagnosed with brain cancer (glioblastoma), and in November 2022, he had surgery to treat the severe disease. After receiving that care, Turner toured with Blackberry Smoke until December 2023. Once word of the death spread on Sunday, fellow musicians’ reactions came in swiftly.

The group also recommended on social media that anyone who would like to support Turner’s family go to this Families and Communities Together Relief (FACT) page. FACT provides financial assistance to families whose primary breadwinner suffers from a serious illness.

Together with his brother, bassist Richard Turner, Turner was one of the original members of the group. Released on February 16, the group’s most recent album, “Be Right Here,” which was produced by Dave Cobb, debuted at No. 26 on the Billboard country albums chart and No. 23 on the Billboard rock album chart.

Since the start of the year, Blackberry Smoke has continued to tour in 2024 using a stand-in drummer. Turner’s health problems initially came to light in August 2022 when he experienced a heart attack at home in Atlanta. After receiving a stent, he was able to recuperate and shortly return to the stage.

When he was brought to the emergency room in November of that year, an MRI found an aggressive and rare brain tumor.
