Davido Is Suing A Kenyan Media Company Over An April Fool’s Day Article

Nigerian Afrobeats musician Davido has declared he is going to sue a Kenyan TV station for allegedly accusing him of possessing drugs on April 1.

A fake report on K24 TV’s website claimed that the musician was arrested at Nairobi’s Jomo Kenyatta International Airport for having cocaine aboard his private aircraft. The story was posted on April Fool’s Day. The joke was planned to go up right at the same time when Davido left Kenya following his Timeless performances at Raha Fest in Nairobi and Kampala, Uganda.

Davido responded to the news on his Instagram, saying that he thinks it incredibly irresponsible to fabricate claims of international crimes, even in light of April Fool’s Day. The post went viral immediately upon its release.

Davido praised his supporters for their unwavering support and stated that his attorney was pursuing legal action against “the media parties responsible for generating this information.”

Many Kenyans expressed their opinion on social media that the joke was too serious and questioned the media outlet’s gatekeepers’ role. K24 TV removed the story after receiving negative feedback, but not before screenshots of the original post—which had amassed thousands of views—began to circulate.

This prompted Kenya’s Directorate of Criminal Investigations to share an image of the story with the word “Fake News” highlighted across it.
