Rapper Drake has been identified as the new owner of late rapper Tupac Shakur’s crown ring, which he paid over $1 million on Thursday at the auctions. The rapper flaunted his expensive new purchase on Instagram, a ring that once belonged to Tupac Shakur, the greatest rapper ever. He captioned a photo of his new crown jewel referencing Travis Scott’s album Utopia.

A little more than a week before being shot and killed in Las Vegas at 25, Shakur made his final public appearance at the 1996 MTV Video Music Awards while sporting the unique, self-made ring on his left finger. “Pac & Dada 1996” engraved on the jewellery band alludes to the wearer’s engagement to actress Kidada Jones in 1996.

By sharing a picture of the ring on his Instagram story, Drake revealed he was the ring’s unknown buyer. According to a news release from Sotheby’s, the auction house that sold the jewellery item, the Grammy-winning rapper has acquired the crown ring. The gold ring with rubies and diamonds was designed and ordered in 1996, according to CBS, by the Hit ‘Em Up star. He last wore the ring at the 1996 MTV Video Music Awards in New York. He was murdered three days later and died from injuries less than a week later.

According to Sotheby’s, the ring sold for three times its original estimate of $300,000, making it the most expensive hip-hop artefact ever sold at auction. It is the only piece of hip-hop artefact that costs more than $1 million.

According to Sotheby’s, the singer and activist created the ring for several months in 1996 with his godmother Fula. After serving time in prison for being found guilty of sexual abuse, he was released in late 1995 and immediately signed a contract with Death Row Records. He was also putting the finishing touches on the Euphanasia media company.

The released statement said,

“Reflecting his recent affinity for Niccolo Machiavelli’s political manifesto ‘The Prince,’ Tupac modelled his design after the crowns of the medieval kings of Europe in ‘an act of self-coronation,'”. “According to Fula, a celebration of survival through a tumultuous year in an oft tumultuous life.”

The sizable ruby encircles two pavé diamonds in the crown-shaped ring. According to Sotheby’s, Shakur selected the ruby as the centrepiece because the gem is figuratively connected to the archetypes of monarchy and wealth.
