Lebanese Celebrate Mayyas’ Victory On “America’s Got Talent”

Tearfully applauding the all-female group for what the judges and audience praised as a captivating and mesmerizing performance, fans from all age groups and religious backgrounds in the troubled nation and its sizable diaspora.

Elissa, a Lebanese music diva, congratulated Mayyas and said, “Proud, proud, proud,” while acting Prime Minister Najib Mikati gushed, “Lebanese creativity shines” throughout the performance. Twitter user, Wael expressed the feeling toward the team that defied all odds as follows: “They come from a country ravaged by crisis and, despite the difficulties, they managed to be the best. Lebanese all around the world are proud of you.”

The group, directed by choreographer Nadim Cherfan, won a $1 million prize and the opportunity to open a show in Las Vegas for their spectacular performance that included feather fans, belly dance, and white light orbs. “You gave us a glimpse of hope and showed the world what Lebanese women are capable of,” tweeted another supporter, DivaMaj, praising the ensemble that won the 2019 Arabs Got Talent competition.

Even the military got involved, tweeting somewhat sternly that “the army command congratulates the Mayyas group, its trainers and members, on winning America’s Got Talent.” The small nation, which had been suffering from severe economic hardship and political impasse for nearly three years, experienced a moment of uncommon relief and solidarity after The Mayyas’ victory in the season finale.
