It’s a Black Week for Students and Families of the Madonna University students who died in a fatal accident.
According to reports, eight Madonna University students from Rivers State were fatally burnt in a car accident on their way home from school. The reports say that the event happened on Saturday when students traveled from Ebonyi state to Taraba state along the Trans-Saharan highway in Abakaliki.
The students were reportedly going home after the university announced a break for the upcoming elections. However, as of the time of this report, Chris Anyanwu, the Ebonyi police spokesperson, had not returned calls or texts regarding the incident.
In preparation for the upcoming elections, the federal government ordered all universities nationwide to close on February 9 for three weeks.
According to reports, their bus caught fire, became utterly burnt, and left eight people dead and ten critically injured. They were hurried to the Alex Ekwueme Teaching Hospital in Abakaliki, the state capital.
A representative of the institution named Benedicta Egoyibom verified the occurrence when approached by media representatives. However, she refrained from going into specifics, stating that the situation is now under investigation and is confidential for the sake of the involved families.
“Yeah, that’s correct. She said that the school is attempting to learn more about the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The families and friends of those who perished in the disaster have continued to post comments about the development on social media. The parent of one of the deceased students, Ezra Usman, lamented the situation on his Facebook page.
“Grace Usman Ezra, I never knew sending you to Madonna university will lead to your untimely death. Eighteen of you left Madonna to Jalingo yesterday only to hear the news that your bus had an accident and caught fire; 8 out of 18 came out from the bus,” he wrote.
“It is well with 10 of you and the rest alive; I pray for your speedy recovery, and may God comfort us all that lost our children.”
