Major Shake-up in Nigeria’s Police Force: Officers Dismissed and Demoted for Misconduct

Police Service Commission Takes Decisive Action Against Abuse of Office

In a significant move to uphold discipline and integrity within the ranks, the Police Service Commission (PSC) in Nigeria has recently dismissed three senior police officers over cases of misconduct and abuse of office. The PSC also demoted a Commissioner of Police (CP) to the rank of Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), marking a significant shift in the force’s hierarchy.

The decisions were made during the PSC’s 21st plenary meeting, presided over by Justice Clara Bata Ogunbiyi, a retired Justice of the Supreme Court. The meeting was held at the PSC’s corporate headquarters in Jabi, Abuja. The Commission’s Chairman, Dr. Solomon Arase, a retired Inspector General of Police, commended the members for their diligent attention to disciplinary matters.

In addition to the dismissals and demotion, the PSC also approved the compulsory retirement of an Assistant Commissioner of Police. The officer has been directed to refund all entitlements wrongly paid to him. The Commission also approved the posthumous promotion of late Inspector Ifeanyi Oroke to the next rank of Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) for acts of gallantry.

The PSC reinstated one dismissed Inspector, Augustina Oko, with the reinstatement to take effect from the date she was dismissed. The Commission also approved the punishment of severe reprimand for 16 officers and reprimand for another 18. Two other officers were issued letters of warning.

In a related development, CP Adebola A. Hamzat has assumed office as the Commissioner of Police in Oyo State. CP Hamzat, a renowned investigator and intelligence expert, has served in various capacities as a police officer prior to his new posting. His operational experience and core intelligence competencies have earned him duty tours with strong commendations at the United Nations missions in Kosovo and Timor Leste.

The recent actions by the PSC underline the commitment to maintaining discipline and integrity within the Nigerian Police Force. The measures taken against misconduct and abuse of office send a clear message that such behavior will not be tolerated. The PSC’s actions are a significant step towards ensuring that the police force remains a trusted and respected institution in Nigeria.
