Marisa Abela Shares On Playing The Role Of Amy Winehouse In Upcoming Biopic

Marisa Abela spoke to NME about her experience playing Amy Winehouse in the upcoming biopic “Back to Black,”  sharing insights and reflections on the role. As an accomplished actor known for her roles in “Industry,”  “COBRA,”  and “Rogue Agent,”  Abela discussed her leading role in the Sam Taylor-Johnson-directed film while walking the red carpet of the 2024 BRIT Awards. During the interview, Abela thoughtfully shared how she expertly embodied the iconic singer and captured Winehouse’s essence in the new biopic. Abela also shared the essential values she learned from the project, which follow Winehouse’s rise to fame, her music career and her personal life. She explained that these values would stay with her going forward and inspire her to be a better actor. The actor also reflected on her weight loss for the role, describing the challenging process as a learning experience.

Sharing, she said,

“It was a lot! It was amazing, it was a big task and it took a long time,”

“We’ve been living with this film for over a year now and I had four months to really get into preparation mode.”

“It was hardcore, but it was great.”

“There are so many [stories that stuck with me] , but it’s more just her essence. I think that will stay with me forever now,”

“If I’ve learned anything from Amy it’s to be fearless,”

“It’s an incredible lesson to be able to get so close to.”

“I almost see my body as a true instrument that I’m training for a job. I need to work at it in the same way that I’m practising guitar.”

“If I was practising for the last four weeks and I still couldn’t play a song, I’d be scared. It’s separating my feelings around weight loss, which I think for me, in the long run, will be really positive.”

Abela praised the song ‘Love Is A Losing Game’, saying it is a timeless piece of poetry and writing. She also shared that her favourite song from Amy Winehouse’s collection is ‘Stronger Than Me’. The movie ‘Back to Black’ stars Abela as Winehouse, Jack O’Connell, Eddie Marsan, Juliet Cowan, and Lesley Manville and will be released on April 12. Abela, who had started taking voice lessons for the part, performed all the songs in the movie, as confirmed by the film’s director last month.
