Yeni Kuti, the eldest child of the renowned Afrobeat musician Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, recently led her siblings in paying tribute to their father. On Wednesday, the veteran entertainer also honoured his late father on social media by sharing photos featuring Fela, his mother, Prof Olikoye Ransome-Kuti, veteran guitarist JK Braimah, and others.

On the 26th anniversary of the death of Afrobeat icon Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, his eldest child Yeni Kuti, who is a 62-year-old dancer, singer, and broadcaster, has led her siblings in honouring their father with a tribute posted on social media on Wednesday. She wrote:

“The many faces of Fela! August 2nd, 1997. We shall never forget. Fela as a young man, Fela as a guy wearing earrings, with JK his best friend, with Uncle Koye.”

Yeni Kuti sparked strong emotions by sharing a classic video of the iconic Fela performing at the Africa Day Rally Event at Tafawa Balewa Square on Lagos Island. The footage showcased Fela’s electrifying stage presence and powerful message, reminding viewers of his immense influence on African music and activism. Many fans felt nostalgia for Fela’s era and praised Yeni Kuti for sharing such a treasured piece of history.

 

Kunle Kuti, the speaker’s brother in the video, shared a clip of their father speaking against corruption. He added a caption to his post.,

“it’s 26 years today since you left to join your ancestors. We miss you so much. We are still suffering and smiling in this country of pain. Continue to rest in peace. “Africa must unite. Blackism a Force of the mind.”

Shalewa Kuti, Kunle’s sisterKunle’sd a video of Fela displaying injuries inflicted on him by the police. As a DJ and music producer, she added a caption to her post.,

“August 2nd 1997…. You will forever be missed! Thanks for being such a great inspiration to me and to all… Love you forever.”

Motunrayo Kuti, Shalewa’s sistShalewa’sd a post from Nigerian Codex with a message.

“Today in 1997, Afrobeat legend Fela Anikulapo-Kuti died. Sir your Legend remains victorious in spite of history. Rest on baba!”

Seun Kuti, the Afrobeat musician and brother of Motunrayo, also honoured their legendary father with a tribute. In his message, Seun expressed his heartfelt feelings.

“Eleeeeeeniyaaaaaaaaaaaan!!! October 15 1938- August 2 1997. Yesterday was hard, today is better!!! Love you always,”.

Fela died on August 2, 1997, at 58, due to AIDS. During a press conference, the cause of his death was publicly disclosed by his brother, Prof. Ransome-Kuti, who was Nigeria’s health minister then. Fela’s death marked a significant loss for the music industry and his fans worldwide. His passing also brought attention to the AIDS epidemic, highlighting the need for increased awareness and prevention efforts in Nigeria and beyond.
