Michael Bublé’s “Christmas” Takes Number 1 Spot On U.K. Albums Charts

The Christmas album by Canadian singer Michael Bublé has beaten Taylor Swift’s former chart-topper “1989 (Taylor’s Version)” and The Weeknd’s “The Highlights” to claim the No. 1 spot. The festive hit “Christmas” by Michael Bublé has returned to the top of the U.K. album chart for the sixth non-consecutive week, closing out the year at the Official U.K. Albums Chart summit. The chart was published on Friday, December 29th. There’s no doubt about it: “Christmas” is the gift that keeps giving.

According to the Official Charts Company, the Christmas album first topped the charts in November 2011. It returned to No. 1 for two weeks in December of the same year and has since held the top spot in January 2021 and December 2022. The album features five of the top 40 biggest Christmas songs of the 21st century in the UK, including “It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas” (No. 1), “Holly Jolly Christmas” (No. 8), “Santa Claus is Coming to Town” (No. 15), “Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)” (No. 19), and “Jingle Bells” (No. 20) with the Puppini Sisters.

During the festive season, as Brits exchanged gifts, many people listened to compilations as background music. Elton John’s “Diamonds” (released by Mercury/UMR) climbed up to No. 4 from No. 12 on the Official U.K. Albums Chart, ABBA’s “Gold: Greatest Hits” (released by Polydor) rose from No. 15 to No. 5, Eminem’s “Curtain Call: Greatest Hits” (released by Interscope) moved up from No. 10 to No. 9, and Fleetwood Mac’s “50 Years: Don’t Stop” (released by Rhino) climbed from No. 23 to No. 13. The highest new entry on the chart was by vocal group Pentatonix, whose album “The Greatest Christmas Hits” (released by RCA) debuted at No. 64 on the chart, joining the festive season’s playlist.

ABBA’s career retrospective album has now spent 1,130 weeks on the Official U.K. Albums Chart. It has made its first appearance in the top 5 since September 2021. As expected, many festive compilations also found their way into the chart. Bing Crosby’s “Christmas Classics” (released by UMR/Virgin) moved up from No. 73 to No. 18, while Nat King Cole’s “The Christmas Song” (released by UMR/Virgin) rose from No. 86 to No. 22. Both achieved new peak positions.
