Remy Ma Claims She Ushered In “Unity Era” Among Female Rappers

Remy Ma believes her performance at Summer Jam in 2017 was vital in promoting unity among women in hip-hop. During her interview with Hot97 on February 17th, the “Terror Squad” rapper spoke positively about her efforts to empower female rappers by inviting them to perform Queen Latifah’s classic track “U.N.I.T.Y.”. According to Remy Ma, this was an essential step towards creating a more supportive and collaborative environment for women in the hip-hop industry.

She said.

“Catfight every time you turn around,”  “I feel like that’s something that, when I first came home and I started recording again, that I really aspired to be a part of and to make happen. I kind of feel like it started when we did Summer Jam that year. It was me, Latifah, Lyte, Cardi, Young M.A., Kim, Monie Love, Yo-Yo. Everybody — Rah Digga — from all the different generations. The past, the present, and the future on the same stage.”

“From there, I feel like that kind of opened up the doors, Not just for the artists themselves, but for people to see. I feel like people didn’t know they could have this many people that they like at one time. I even see it now even with some of the fans, because it used to be that everyone had their own fanbase. But now you see the fanbases combining.”

Remy Ma’s performance was noteworthy among Nicki Minaj fans because Remy and Nicki were in a heated feud at the time. The highlight of their back-and-forth was the release of “SheTHER,” a nearly seven-minute diss track over the instrumental of Nas’ famous Jay-Z diss track, “Ether.” The song was a scathing attack on Nicki’s personal and professional life, accusing her of everything from plastic surgery to sleeping with industry executives. In November, the rap world was abuzz with rumours that Nicki Minaj and Remy Ma’s long-standing feud was finally ending. The speculation was sparked when Minaj shared some of Remy’s rhymes on her Instagram Stories as part of her promotional campaign for her upcoming album, Pink Friday 2. Fans and critics alike were quick to pick up on the social media activity, with many speculating that the two rappers had buried the hatchet and were ready to move on.
