Reports Reveal Lil Wayne Got $9 Million In COVID Aid For “Having A Drug-Free Tour Workplace”

It was recently reported that Lil Wayne and Post Malone, among other artists, received significant financial aid from the US government for their touring practices during the pandemic. Lil Wayne’s touring company purportedly claimed to be a “drug-free” workplace to receive $9 million in federal pandemic aid through the Shuttered Venue Operators Grant program. Although it later came to light that Post Malone also used a similar justification for his touring company to receive more funds, there’s no denying that the pandemic severely impacted the music industry, leaving many artists and venues struggling to make ends meet. While it’s true that both Lil Wayne and Post Malone have a history of drug use, it’s important to remember that the SBA did not take this into account when reviewing their applications. Although some fans and publications have criticized the rushed review process, the SBA clarified that they did not consider “personal actions” or drug use from March 2020 to June 2022, the eligibility period for this compensation.

It’s worth noting that the touring companies received aid under the Shuttered Venue Operators Grant program, which is intended to help music venues stay afloat during bankruptcy and requires certified compliance with federal laws. However, some critics have suggested that a double standard may apply here. Public health expert Harold Pollack of the University of Chicago commented that “when you have social status, your substance use is treated differently. They don’t brutalize many celebrities for behaviours that we would very harshly treat in people with less prestige.”

While it’s difficult to say whether Lil Wayne and Post Malone were entirely truthful in their application processes, it’s clear that the pandemic devastated the music industry. It’s essential to empathize with those affected, including artists who have struggled to make a living during these unprecedented times.
