Seun Kuti, the son of the iconic musician Fela Kuti and a Nigerian Afrobeat singer, has asserted that Lagos State is Portuguese territory, which has stirred up debate. The singer justifies his assertion that Lagos was given a Portuguese name. He claimed that whoever names something or someone owns it.

In light of the upcoming gubernatorial elections, the long-running ownership dispute surrounding Lagos has received additional traction. As a result, several parties are putting out conflicting assertions. Kuti, however, has received much attention for his claim that Lagos belongs to the Portuguese.

Kuti recently asserted that Lagos belonged to the Portuguese because they were the first Europeans to enter the region in a series of Instagram posts. He maintained that because the Portuguese had built a trade center there before other Europeans came, they had a legal claim to the area.

His words were, “Lagos is no man’s land – wrong. Lagos is yoruba land – wrong again. Lagos is a European satellite slave port – correct!! You don’t know Lagos!! Hey, ode, look here; Lagos is a Portuguese word. It is called the slave coast. Learn your history, you no go gree. Everyone moved to Lagos to slave!! All prominent Lagos elites are slavers. Defend your masters all you want!! Why Ibadan no get Portuguese name? Wetin be the french name of Oshogbo? He who names it owns it.”Seun Kuti Makes Unsettling Revelation About Lagos' True Ownership, Yours Truly, News, April 21, 2024Seun Kuti Makes Unsettling Revelation About Lagos' True Ownership, Yours Truly, News, April 21, 2024Seun Kuti Makes Unsettling Revelation About Lagos' True Ownership, Yours Truly, News, April 21, 2024Seun Kuti Makes Unsettling Revelation About Lagos' True Ownership, Yours Truly, News, April 21, 2024Seun Kuti Makes Unsettling Revelation About Lagos' True Ownership, Yours Truly, News, April 21, 2024

Several Nigerians have expressed shock and astonishment in response to Kuti’s statements, which have elicited a wide range of reactions. Some have charged Kuti with historical ignorance and colonialist advocacy. Others contend that Kuti’s assertions are valid and that the Nigerian government needs to do more to recognize the city’s nuanced past.

Seun Kuti’s recent assertions have fueled the ongoing debate on “Who owns Lagos State.” Although Kuti’s claim that the Portuguese were Lagos’ original owners may be debatable, it has drawn attention to the region’s complicated history and sparked discussions on how to respect best and honor it.
